M for Monsters!

While I finish this project for Marc, I'm reflecting on my own projects and trying to have somethig published this year while I finnish my other long term projects!

Helsinki part 1

Back from Helsinki Comics Festival 2012 which was another amazing event.

I met so many interesting people there. It's amazing to see how the TRIP books sell over there; people seem to get it more than here.  Also, I was on this panel about political comics with Paula Bulling and Marc Tessier. Paula has this amazing book out - although I haven't read it yet, I've just seen extracts, I should say this book has an amazing subject and look.

The book is about refugees in Germany, more precisely people who are waiting to get accepted or not into the country - so in fact these people have no status. It was really nice to see the level of involvement that Paula has towards the subject and how she relates her experience as a German and an author. I don't know if the book is available in Canada in English, but if your German is good you can get it here! After the panel, we had the chance to talk to Johann Ulrich, editor for Avant-verlag. I cant wait for those books to be translated, the subjects are just amazing! More on that later!

I also met this cool artist from Belgium (nice to see that they have other styles besides franco-belge over there.) This book is really nice, Mostly cola, by Ward Zwart.

I also had the chance to see Tommi Musturi again. What an incredible artist this guy is. He had an installation at Kiasma Art Museum; just a fantastic work of art, mesmerizing really. For those who don't know Tommi, he's worth discovering. He has a series of four books out in English and French called Le rêve de Mr. Espoir,

but his bibliography is much more vast. His last book is Samuelin Matkassa:
mais sa bibliographie est beaucoup plus étendue. Son dernier est Samuelin Matkassa:

Another amazing book! At this point I don't think I need to say how much I love Finnish comics, so for now, I'll stop and continue at a later post. There are still several artists that I have not mentionned like Terhi, Amanda, Mikko, etc... So look for that post soon.

For now I need to say thanks to the Helsinki Comics Festival's organizers who welcomed us and made sure we had a great time in Finland.  First, Elisa Drossos who worked so hard to find us a place to stay last minute, Kalle Hakkola, Otto " the man" Sinisalo, Frida Lindholm, Maura Manninen, Kaarisilta Gallery, and everybody else that welcomed us.
